Michigan Atlas & Campaign is an atlas that educates people on the effects of the recession and capitalism prevalent in Michigan in the past and in the present.
While the Lower Michigan is viewed as a mitten, Upper Michigan often feel isolated on maps because they tend to cut them off and so they have this "Yooper" pride and even filed for a proposal to become their own state, called Superior. Yoopers refer Lower Michigan residents as trolls and I wanted to show the relationship by having the Upper be represented as a hand that is pulling the mitten off to reveal its true nature. On top of the mitten, there are facts/news that Michigan shows off, but the strings that unravel from the mitten display Michigan's current struggles within its economy.
From my research, I narrowed down to 5 pressing key points I wanted to address: the auto industry, unemployment, education, food & agriculture, and human capital. All data was obtained from recent news at the time of the project(2012) and Bureau of Labor Statistics.
While using the same visual language, I created a campaign by having people buy yarn to support the state in the different sectors and also included knitting needles that represent the Upper and Lower Michigan so that they can work together to mend the economy. Also, Michiganders often comment about the cold, so the yarn could be used to knit mittens and scarves!
